How to get job in Software Testing quickly?

How to get job in Software Testing quickly?

In recent days this is the most asked question to me by readers. How to get software testing job? How to come in software testing field? or Can I get job in testing?
All these questions are similar and I want to give also similar answer for this. I have written post where you can analyze your abilities and know which are the most important skills required for software testing.
I will continue mentioning that “know your interest before going into any career field”. Just going to software testing career or any other hot career is wrong and which may result into loss of your job interest as well as your job.
Now you know your abilities, skills, interests right? and you have made decision to go for software testing career as it is your favorite career and you suit most in this career. So here is a guideline for how to get a good job in software testing field.
If you are a fresher and just passed out from your college or passing out in coming months then you need to prepare well for some software testing methodologies. Prepare all the manual testing concepts. If possible have some hands-on on some automation and bug tracking tools like winrunner and test director. It is always a good idea to join any software testing institute or class which will provide you a good start and direction of preparation. You can join any 4 months duration software testing course or can do diploma in software testing which is typically of 6 months to 1 year. Keep the preparation going on in your course duration. This will help you to start giving interviews right after getting over your course.
If you have some sort of previous IT experience and want to switch to software testing then it’s somewhat simple for you. Show your previous IT experience in your resume while applying for software testing jobs. If possible do some crash course to get idea of software testing concepts like I mentioned for freshers above. Keep in mind that you have some kind of IT experience so be prepared for some tough interview questions here.
As companies always prefer some kind of relevant experience for any software job, its better if you have relevant experience in software testing and QA. It may be any kind of software testing tools hands-on or some testing course from reputed institutes.
Please always keep in mind- Do not add fake experience of any kind. This can ruin your career forever. Wait and try for some more days to get the job by your abilities instead of getting into trap of fake experience.
Last important words, Software testing is not ‘anyone can do career!’ Remove this attitude from your mind if someone has told such kind of foolish thing to you. Testing requires in depth knowledge of SDLF, out of box thinking, analytical skill and some programming language skill apart from software testing basics.
So best luck and start preparation for your rocking career! I will continue writing this career series and what you actually need to prepare for software testing interview.

Choosing Software Testing as your Career

Choosing Software Testing as your Career
Testing Skill Improvement, Career in software Testing, Testing Tips and resources, How to be a good tester, Basics of Software testing

If you are willing to choose software testing as your career then this is a must read!
Nowadays I get many mails asking me about software testing jobs. Should I select software testing as my career? How to switch to software testing from other job experience? Which institute should I join for testing course? And many more …

I will give a common answer to all these questions whether you should choose software testing as your career or not? Let me first explain in brief about software testing. Software testing and quality control are the processes by means of which application quality is improved. Software testing is done in each phase of product life cycle i.e from requirement specifications , design, coding, to the user acceptance.

Many complex software structures require in depth analytical and technical skill to test the applications. Knowledge of programming languages is required for unit testing, scripting skill essential for Automation testing.

Now we will speak about your career in software testing. No one can guide you choosing your career more than you! Its right and you are the only person to decide your career.
Do self-assessment to figure out where you can fit well. Do study of your skills, interests, strengths, weaknesses.

Ask some questions to your self like:
What is your goal in life?
What will increase your satisfaction and skill?
What is your interest?
Which skills you have developed in your life till now?
Which training you did that can be applied to future job?

By answering these questions you will automatically come to decision.

To switch to software testing career What skills you will require? Is the most important question I think.

In my previous post what makes a good test engineer, I mentioned some of the software testing required skills.

1. Communication: Customer communication as well as team communication most important for this job. Written communication as well!

2. Technical skill: As I mentioned earlier for testing technical domain skill in languages is important.

Some of the Testing skills are:
Project life cycle,
Testing concepts,
Knowledge of testing types,
Programming languages familiarity,
Database concepts,
Test plan idea,
Ability to analyze requirements,
Documentation skill,
Testing tools

3. Leadership quality
4. Analytical and judging skill

Don’t worry if you don’t have some of the skills mentioned above. You can always learn the things if you have interest. Non-IT personas can also grow fast by gaining necessary skills.

So finally selecting testing as your career ask one question to yourself:
Are you looking for career in software testing or just a Job?

Best of luck!

What is the difference between Smoke testing and Sanity testing?
Smoke testing is after build releasing we will test high level functionalities working or not. Sanity testing is we will test all functionalities working properly or not.
Sanity Testing: Teswt Engineer cover basic functionality of the buld to validate " whether the build is stable for complete testing or not"
Smoke Testing: It is an extra shakeup in sanity process.
In this tesing, testing team rejects build with specific reasons where that build is not working
sanity testing is an Initial effort to check whether the application can be tested further without any interruption. Basic gui functionality, connectivity to database are concentrated here.
Smoke Testing:Its confusing question and answer too.
It covers most crucial functions of the application..
testing carried out check whether most crucial functions of the application work fine or not? dont bother about the in-depth coverage of each testset.
what are most crucial functions in the build, you should know it before coming to testing phase. or your manager will write a seperate high-level testcase for that.
Sanity Testing:-Tester conducts the Sanity test to ensure the stability of the application build.Tester finds weather the application build is stable for complete application or not.
Smoke Testing:-It covers the major functionality of the application without bothering with finer details.
Conceptually Smoke testing and sanity testing both are same, but perceptionally these are different.Smoke testing:Smoke testing is conducted with negative perception,it is the testing in which all the functionaliteis are avaliable are not is tested , to proceed for further overall testing.Sanity testing: This is also test for to check whether all the functionaliteis are available are not.But this testing is conducted with positive perception.
Smoke Sanity
1 Smoke testing originated in the hardware testing practice of turning on a new piece of hardware for the first time and considering it a success if it does not catch fire and smoke. In software industry, smoke testing is a shallow and wide approach whereby all areas of the application without getting into too deep, is tested. A sanity test is a narrow regression test that focuses on one or a few areas of functionality. Sanity testing is usually narrow and deep. 2 A smoke test is scripted--either using a written set of tests or an automated test A sanity test is usually unscripted. 3 A Smoke test is designed to touch every part of the application in a cursory way. It's is shallow and wide. A Sanity test is used to determine a small section of the application is still working after a minor change. 4 Smoke testing will be conducted to ensure whether the most crucial functions of a program work, but not bothering with finer details. (Such as build verification). Sanity testing is a cursory testing; it is performed whenever a cursory testing is sufficient to prove the application is functioning according to specifications. This level of testing is a subset of regression testing. 5 Smoke testing is normal health check up to a build of an application before taking it to testing in depth.
sanity testing is to verify whether requirements are met or not,
checking all features breadth-first.

How to Report a Bug

It feels wonderful to be able to write the first blog post on our product as it is being released. I thought the most pertinent and easiest subject to write about would be the heart of the tester’s process: how to report a bug once you have found one.

First, and foremost, the first and most important rule of reporting bugs is to be as specific as possible! I cannot reinforce enough how imperative it is for testers to write every possible piece of pertinent information. It is very easy for a tester to see a problem in front of them, and not realize that they are not communicating the needed information. When attempting to recreate the problem, a testing manager will be looking at a bug without being familiar with it at all and only through the information the tester provides will they be able to (or not to) recreate the problem.
More specifically related to our platform, here are a few tips for using the uTest Platform:First prior to starting testing you must review the information supplied by the company under the release details. This may include critical information for testing (like sign in codes) or specific test scripts that need to be downloaded.

Now for the information you need to supply when reporting a bug:

Subject: This denotes the title and type of bug. Please fill in with the best categorical description possible.

Type: Type refers to the category of bug. At the moment, there are only a few classifications such as: GUI, logical and Technical. However, as applications are released more types of bugs will be added. Please pick the type which most closely is associated with the bug you found.

Severity: This indicates how severe the bug is to the application. A bug which has only minor impact (i.e. a broken link), is not nearly as severe as a bug which causes the application to crash.

Frequency: How often does the bug happen? Frequency indicates if you can replicate the issue every time you go through the steps, or if it only works a few times.

Maturity: Maturity enables you the tester to report his own impression of the maturity level of the application he is testing.

Action Performed: The test case is the process which the tester went through in order to recreate the bug mentioned. This is the most critical fieldpiece of information because the testing manager will try to reproduce the bug based on the information supplied in this field. Please attempt to list all environment details (for example if you had another application open, etc.), and the exact steps you took in encountering the bug.

Expected Result: This field refers to the tester’s expectations when encountering a situation. For example, if a tester was going to click on a link, the expectation would be that the link would bring them to a specific page.

Actual Result: The result refers to the actual occurrence. In the example above, if the link brought you to a different page, or no page at all, that would be the “result.”

Error Code/Message: The error code refers to if the application gives an actual code output (which it may or may not). An error code might look like: “Error 24282x” The message is reserved for any message displayed; i.e. “Error in code line 272….”

Environment and Additional Info: Environment and additional is where you enter any additional information about the platform you are running, or other external conditions you think might have caused the reported bug.

Attachments: Screenshots and logs are highly important to describe a bug in a professional manner. A good screenshot can make the diffrence between a crystal clear bug and a vague bug. we recommend to attach any file that may help the company to understand the problem faster (and approve the bug faster…).
That’s it for now.

Happy Testing.

Is Your Software Ready for Release?

Determining when software is ready for release is one of the hardest parts of product development. Everyone involved has different criteria for “good enough”:
Product management wants the product to satisfy minimum market expectations in a timely manner.
Program management wants the product to meet minimum design specifications.
Developers want the product to compile and run with as few bugs as possible.
Frequently, when we think about software testing, we stop at what the Developers want. If it compiles, runs, and the bug database is empty, then we ship it. However, the reality of product development is that the bug database is rarely empty and product management must make choices about what features live, die, and must be fixed in version 2.0.
Developing good release specifications is always a challenge, but here are a few recommendations:

1. Define release success and goals in market terms.
Identify what the market actually wants and codify all release specifications and project goals in those terms. Everyone will be working from the same playbook, so this makes it easy to make choices at a later date.
2. Communicate your goals to the entire development team.
Whether you are using agile, waterfall, or something in between, everyone should have line of sight to what the market wants. Even the most junior developer should understand why their code matters to the customer.
3. Prioritize development based on market expectations.
Do the most important parts first. Everyone wants to jump to the interesting parts of the project, but the customer’s idea of interesting may be something else entirely. Making sure valuable work gets done earlier means that the valuable parts can be tested and validated longer and better. If the project hits a snag, it may be possible to release a smaller version that still satisfies some market needs.
4. Make sure QA is on board
Don’t leave your QA team in the dark. They need to test according to the same goals as everyone else, and their bug reports should be prioritized according to the same expectations as everyone else.

Validating with Good Criteria
When validation is on-board with good criteria, then it’s possible for everyone else in the product development team to decide when a product is ready and when it’s not. Test results are clearly aligned with product expectations which are clearly aligned with market demand. The outcome is a product that ships on time with the features and stability the market wants.
The uTest platform features a Maturity Indicator that, when combined with good market based specifications, can readily help product development teams know when a product is really ready for release. Because our community is so large and varied, it’s possible to quickly gather a very informed consensus on the readiness of a product; something that is more difficult to gain in a traditional testing organization. Based on the test cases and user guide, the community constantly evaluates the readiness of a product, allowing a testing manager to tell at a glance how close their release is to good enough.
Having good market driven goals is the first step to successful QA, and any software company can benefit from that alone. Bringing those goals to a testing community like uTest can make assessing release readiness even easier, and that’s good for everyone

How to crack the GD (Group Discussion). 10 simple ways with ppt on GD

How to crack the GD (Group Discussion). 10 simple ways
Many companies and institutes are making group discussion as the first criteria for screening the candidates for face-to-face interviews. And there is reason too for giving huge importance for Group Discussion. First thing Group Discussion is used for mass elimination! And second thing group discussion selection criteria’s are based on actual company requirements.
Communication and Group Discussion skill are two relevant soft skills that are must for software testers.
Why group discussion should be the first criteria for selecting software testers?
Software tester requires communication with different people like team members, managers and customers. So interpersonal skill is very important for tester.
Yesterday one of our readers mailed me about her problem. She is very good at work but when it comes to taking credit for her work, someone else is taking the credit.
Why this is happening? She is lagging in interpersonal skills. Lagging in communication. She might be proficient in many skills, but what if she isn’t able to communicate her thoughts in front of her seniors or evaluators? Simply, she will lose the credits of her own work!
Making a good impression while speaking in meetings or interviews is the basic skill every professional should have. Let’s see how you can make this impression.
What skills are judged in group discussion?
How good you are at communication with others.
How you behave and interact with group.
How open minded are you.
Your listening skill.
How you put forward your views.
Your leadership and decision making skills.
Your analysis skill and subject knowledge.
Problem solving and critical thinking skill.
Your attitude and confidence.
Do’s and Don’ts of Group discussion:
1) Keep eye contact while speaking:Do not look at the evaluators only. Keep eye contact with every team member while speaking.
2) Initiate the GD:Initiating the GD is a big plus. But keep in mind - Initiate the group discussion only when you understood the GD topic clearly and have some topic knowledge. Speaking without proper subject knowledge is bad impression.
3) Allow others to speak:Do not interrupt anyone in-between while speaking. Even if you don’t agree with his/her thoughts do not snatch their chance to speak. Instead make some notes and clear the points when it’s your turn.
4) Speak clearly:Speak politely and clearly. Use simple and understandable words while speaking. Don’t be too aggressive if you are disagreeing with someone. Express your feelings calmly and politely.
5) Make sure to bring the discussion on track:If by any means group is distracting from the topic or goal then simply take initiative to bring the discussion on the track. Make all group members aware that you all need to come to some conclusion at the end of the discussion. So stick to the topic.
6) Positive attitude:Be confident. Do not try to dominate anyone. Keep positive body language. Show interest in discussion.
7) Speak sensibly:Do not speak just to increase your speaking time. Don’t worry even if you speak less. Your thoughts should be sensible and relevant instead of irrelevant speech.
8 ) Listen carefully to others:Speak less and listen more! Pay attention while others are speaking. This will make coherent discussion and you will get involved in the group positively. You will surely make people agree with you.
9) No need to go into much details:Some basic subject analysis is sufficient. No need to mention exact figures while giving any reference. You have limited time so be precise and convey your thoughts in short and simple language.
10) Formal dressing:Do not take it casually. No fancy and funny dressing. You should be comfortable while speaking in group. Positive gesture and body language will make your work easy.

What is client-server and web based testing and how to test these applications

What is client-server and web based testing and how to test these applications

Question:
What is the difference between client-server testing and web based testing and what are things that we need to test in such applications?
Ans: Projects are broadly divided into two types of:
2 tier applications
3 tier applications
CLIENT / SERVER TESTING
This type of testing usually done for 2 tier applications (usually developed for LAN)Here we will be having front-end and backend.
The application launched on front-end will be having forms and reports which will be monitoring and manipulating data
E.g: applications developed in VB, VC++, Core Java, C, C++, D2K, PowerBuilder etc.,The backend for these applications would be MS Access, SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase, Mysql, Quadbase
The tests performed on these types of applications would be- User interface testing- Manual support testing- Functionality testing- Compatibility testing & configuration testing- Intersystem testing.

WEB TESTINGThis is done for 3 tier applications (developed for Internet / intranet / xtranet)Here we will be having Browser, web server and DB server.
The applications accessible in browser would be developed in HTML, DHTML, XML, JavaScript etc. (We can monitor through these applications)
Applications for the web server would be developed in Java, ASP, JSP, VBScript, JavaScript, Perl, Cold Fusion, PHP etc. (All the manipulations are done on the web server with the help of these programs developed)
The DBserver would be having oracle, sql server, sybase, mysql etc. (All data is stored in the database available on the DB server)
The tests performed on these types of applications would be- User interface testing- Functionality testing- Security testing- Browser compatibility testing- Load / stress testing- Interoperability testing/intersystem testing- Storage and data volume testing
A web-application is a three-tier application. This has a browser (monitors data) [monitoring is done using html, dhtml, xml, javascript]-> webserver (manipulates data) [manipulations are done using programming languages or scripts like adv java, asp, jsp, vbscript, javascript, perl, coldfusion, php] -> database server (stores data) [data storage and retrieval is done using databases like oracle, sql server, sybase, mysql].
The types of tests, which can be applied on this type of applications, are:1. User interface testing for validation & user friendliness2. Functionality testing to validate behaviors, i/p, error handling, o/p, manipulations, services levels, order of functionality, links, content of web page & backend coverage’s3. Security testing4. Browser compatibility5. Load / stress testing6. Interoperability testing7. Storage & data volume testing
A client-server application is a two tier application. This has forms & reporting at front-end (monitoring & manipulations are done) [using vb, vc++, core java, c, c++, d2k, power builder etc.,] -> database server at the backend [data storage & retrieval) [using ms access, sql server, oracle, sybase, mysql, quadbase etc.,]
The tests performed on these applications would be
1. User interface testing
2. Manual support testing
3. Functionality testing
4. Compatibility testing
5. Intersystem testingSome more points to clear the difference between client server, web and desktop applications:
Desktop application:
1. Application runs in single memory (Front end and Back end in one place)
2. Single user only
Client/Server application:
1. Application runs in two or more machines
2. Application is a menu-driven
3. Connected mode (connection exists always until logout)
4. Limited number of users
5. Less number of network issues when compared to web app.
Web application:
1. Application runs in two or more machines
2. URL-driven
3. Disconnected mode (state less)
4. Unlimited number of users
5. Many issues like hardware compatibility, browser compatibility, version compatibility, security issues, performance issues etc.
As per difference in both the applications come where, how to access the resources. In client server once connection is made it will be in state on connected, whereas in case of web testing http protocol is stateless, then there comes logic of cookies, which is not in client server.
For client server application users are well known, whereas for web application any user can login and access the content, he/she will use it as per his intentions.
So, there are always issues of security and compatibility for web application.
Over to you: On which application are you working? Desktop, client-server or web application? What is your experience while testing these applications?
